How I make Money with Amazon

There are a variety of ways to make money with Amazon. The great thing about Amazon is that is a well known brand and people trust it as an online retailer. This means that you don't have to worry about building your own reputation with regards to getting sales.

This is the equivalent of walking people into your local Wallmart or Tescos and getting a cut of everything that they buy because you had taken them into the store. The traditional model would be to have your own shop and to make money on your sales.. however, you know that you cannot undercut the big stores and your margins are always going to be squeezed. Not only worried about making a profit for yourself, you've got staff to pay, rent to pay, utility bills etc.

Millions of people shop at Amazon but how can you get them to go via you? The simplest way to just to tell people about the products by putting an Amazon widget on your website.. if people click on it, they simply are taken to Amazon and anything they buy, you will make some money from the sale. The Carousel widget is shown below:

Now, anytime someone clicks through the link and buys through Amazon, I get upto 10% of the sale price!

There are all sorts of widgets available where you can recommend the products you use or like, you can also have widgets which show the most popular items. There's also a widget which scans your website to figure out what it's about and selects products which are relevant to it.

If you're in the US, you can join Amazon Associates here:

Pageviews chart since 2008

My most successful blog is the Make Me Some Money blog which I started in July 2007. It took me about a year before I put in Google Analytics to monitor the traffic trends (before I was using GetClicky)

Anyway, it's been great to watch it get more and more successfully. I am now getting over 1000 page views a day on it but it's taken a few years to get to this level. I know that's nothing compared with other blogs but still, that's a lot of visitors from the days when I used to get excited if even 5 people came to visit!

I enclose the graph from Google to show this, click for a larger pic:

The Simple Trick that Quadrupled my Adsense revenue

As some of you know, I also own the blogs Fiance2Wife , Make Me Some Money and Rich Poor Student and have been experimenting with them in terms of monetisation.

One simple trick which I implemented a few months back has quadrupled my Adsense revenue and I would like to share this. I previously had adverts which were the 468 x 60 variety within a post... I like these because they made my posts looks tidy and integrated and earnings were ok. I was loathe to try the larger ones as I thought they would make my site look ugly and could turn off my visitors.

However, one bored day, I decided to experiment anyway (I could also put it all back if I could see visitor numbers start to go down or if people sent me emails saying how horrid it looks). I swapped out the 468 x 60 ones with the larger 300 x 250 or the 336 x 280 and boom, my Adsense revenue quadrupled! If you look at my links above you can see that I have done this on all my blogs now and there's been no sign decreased visitor numbers.. if anything, it's been going up and that also means more revenue. No one has wrote in to say how messy the sites look and it doesn't detract from the content that I already have on them.

Try it and let me know, I'd be interested to know how you got on or if indeed you have some other simple tricks which could help raise it even more.

Just so you know, Adsense have something called CTR (Clickthru Rate) which is the percent of clicks on adverts vs the number of times your adverts are seen. I was getting around 0.4% on average before but now it's around 1.5% which is awesome. There are some days of course I get much higher but I'm taking an average across all my blogs.

Upwards and onwards :)
